Just check out any discussion of FF and wait for 5 minutes – most likely, you will hear "yaar 7 toh hot chal raha hai right now". "Hot number", of course, is any digit or Patti, which appears multiple times in a certain period of time and is supposed to appear again due to luck or momentum. Sounds reasonable, doesn't it? But, based on my experiment with real Baji data, I found out that the hot number does not exist at all. Here is why.

What is "Hot Number"?

The concept of "hot number" in Kolkata Fatafat community is the digit (from 0 to 9) or Patti (from 000 to 999), which appeared multiple times recently. Players consider such numbers lucky and in the streak, so they should keep betting on them in order to make them appear again. This rule works in all other kinds of gambling, such as roulette table, sportsbook, or even a slot machine. Such phenomenon is called the hot hand fallacy in statistics.

My One-Month Experiment with Kolkata FF

For the duration of one month, I have collected all the Baji results from Kolkata FF games (232 Bajis, since I excluded 4 Sundays), and identified all the digits and Patties, which appeared 3 or more times in any consecutive series of 5 Bajis (such numbers are considered "hot"). Then, I have calculated how often such "hot" numbers managed to keep their streak during next 10 Bajis. I wanted to figure out if luck is really going on.

- Average delay of reappearance of "hot" Patti is 67 Bajis, which is one and a half weeks.

- Frequency of each digit is between 9.8% and 10.4% during the whole month, which is expected.

Why People Believe in the Myth

The existence of the myth of "hot number" has psychological roots. Human mind remembers all success cases ("see, 7 came again!"), but does not remember all failures ("oh 7 did not appear for 12 Bajis in a row"). This is called the confirmation bias and explains why people prefer remembering all the dreams that come true, but forgetting all others. "Hot number" does not exist, only your mind remembers selectively.

Mistakes Made By Players Looking for "Hot Number"

- Bet more money on "hot" digit after 2-3 successful appearances in a row.

- Ignore the cold digits, which still have the same probability of appearance.

- Confuse short streaks with a big advantage in long-term frequency of number.

- Play and chase the losses if the "hot number" does not appear anymore.

After analyzing real-life Baji results for one month, I can say that the myth of "hot number" is debunked. Luck does not exist, because streak is a consequence of randomness, not vice versa. And the only rational thing that a beginner can do is to treat each Baji as an independent event and not to let previous results affect bet amount.
